The Glen

When I was a little girl, there was no Glen Town Center.  Instead, there was a US Naval Air Base and I LOVED it.  I remember squealing with delight every time we drove past it when I saw soldiers and officers clad in uniforms and riding in camouflage covered trucks and airplanes flying overhead.  Now that the base is relocated, the city of Glenview has not forgotten its rich history even though The Glen is now a great outdoor mall with wonderful businesses including shops and restaurants.

There are many different statues and other structures that honor the brave men and women who served our country so valiantly.  I just love when a place may change in terms of appearance and purpose but still remembers and honors the past, don’t you?

There are three shops that we love to visit at The Glen:  Pigtails and Crewcuts, Evereve, and Barbara’s Bookstore.  As I wrote in my previous article about Pigtails and Crewcuts, we absolutely love the care and patience the hairdressers have when dealing with my squirmy little boys.

Evereve, formerly known as “Hot Mama” is a favorite store not only because of their great denim and post-baby body friendly clothes, but because they celebrate moms.  How do they do this?  Through trendy and fashionable clothes, as well as having a train table, toys, and endless animal crackers for your kids to nosh on while you shop.

Barbara’s Bookstore is a great independent bookstore with a wonderful play area and a plethora of puzzles, games, and of course, books.  As a Reading Specialist, I am impressed with the wide variety of books they have on display–not just the classics and bestsellers.  Instead, the independent book store clearly makes an effort to support independent writers. Our favorite performer, the StoryBook Mom, also does readings here and never fails to pack the house with her charismatic readings.

Before we can leave or head to lunch, we always have to make a stop at the water fountain, of course. The water fountain is a focal point for the outdoor mall, but shockingly is never too crowded so we like to have a snack or lunch while watching the bubbling water. My boys love to run from statue to statue while thinking about the creative way they will throw their coins into the fountains.

There are always tons of fun and free family events being held at The Glen Town Center throughout the year.  For more information on those events or to help you plan a fun mommy-son date with your little cutie pie, check out their website.

There is also a neat park with a splash bad, courtyard, sandbox, playground, and more located just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the Glen at Little Bear Park.  Be on the lookout for a blog post about it soon!

What a perfect mommy/son date! I’ll bet he loved the water fountain and bookstore. Enjoy every moment with your little ones. My son is 22 now, and we are still close due to the mommy/son dates we had when he was your son’s age!
