Get in the Photo, Moms!

I am a picture person. I simply LOVE them. If I don’t have my phone with me when we are out and about I get a nervous twitch (and not just because of my work demands), and I am happy to cart around my giant camera if that means that I will get high quality photos of family and friends that will last a lifetime. But the thing is…I’m hardly ever in the photos. It’s a mom truth. So I’m making a new push to GET IN THE PICTURE more often, and you can too. After all, our kids will love having photos of them to look back on when they are grown, but they will love those photos more when their mama is right along side them in the picture.

My family and I received a complimentary photo session from Abigail Joyce Photography. All opinions are my own.

Embrace the Imperfect

Now let’s get real. As I write this I have about a gallon of dry shampoo on my head and I’m rocking leggings that I may or may not have worn to bed yesterday. Simply put–I’m not looking Instagram fabulous. But you know what? It really doesn’t matter. No one else cares but me. My kids don’t treat me differently when I have a blow out versus a messy bun (and I’m not even sure that my husband even knows the difference).

So stop stressing so much about how you look in photos. Yes, you have under eye circles. You are a mom. They come with the territory. If you are super self conscious about it, invest in some big sun glasses that make you feel like a movie star. And don’t forget that when you tinker with the lighting on a photo using an app like VSCO, you can make yourself look a little bit more energized (but honestly it isn’t even necessary!).

Rock the Selfie

As much as I love my Instagram husband, he does give me a hard time about taking photos. And since I’m at home with the kids most days he isn’t around to snap away. So I have invested in a selfie stick and am now the “Queen of Selfies” in addition to being the queen of the half naked boys that run around my house. The trick? Hold your arm out and elevate it so you can fit everyone in the photo…and so you aren’t stuck with a double chin.

Book a Photographer

Out of all of the things that you can invest in as a parent, a great photography session should be near the top. Yes, I know that sometimes photographers can be expensive and take up some of the budget that you have allocated for other things, but believe me, it is WORTH it.

Why? Because when you find a photographer that matches your style and puts you at ease in front of the camera, you come away with not just stellar photos, but also stellar memories as a family. Take for example the photos that you see throughout this article. They were taken last weekend by the insanely talented Abigail Joyce Photography

Let me tell you, our family will ALWAYS remember this photo shoot as the one when Mommy was given a floral throne to rule her wild kingdom of boys…and when one of my boys quite literally could NOT stop farting during our session. Seriously. And I would have been mortified if Abbey had not been so welcoming and accepting of our three ring circus. Even better? SHE TAMED THE CIRCUS.

Abbey specializes in family photography and does a superb job of documenting growing families through maternity, newborn, child, and family portrait sessions. As you can tell through these photos, she is an award winning photographer and in very high demand with families throughout the city and suburbs. I especially love that she has a beautiful natural light studio that you can use for your session just in case Mother Nature wants to ruin your outdoor photo shoot.

My boys can be VERY squirrely, and Abbey did such a great job connecting with them so that she could perfectly capture their personalities and also get them to cooperate so that I could get the family portrait that I was longing for. She also was able to work her magic and make ME feel comfortable in front of the camera, which is always hard, especially when I’m trying to get my boys to be on their best behavior and not break any of the expensive camera equipment in the studio.

In addition to her mastery of natural light photography, she provides a high level of customer service that other photographers simply don’t provide. For example, when booking a session she will communicate with you about outfits and locations, providing you with tips that you never would have thought of on your own, such as wearing clothing for your photo shoot that coincides with your home so that your framed photos are cohesive with the style of your home.

Lastly, I would recommend Abigail Joyce Photography is because there are no hidden fees once you book a photo session with her.  Every session comes with a private online gallery, high resolution photos, and a release for personal use and printing. Her transparency will put you at ease so that you are relaxed in front of the camera and will undoubtedly have you booking her again for more of life’s big moments.

So whether you are rocking a selfie, taking a photo before taking a shower, or investing a quality photographer, I just want you mamas to remember to GET IN THE PHOTO. You won’t regret it.

Say Cheese!

I loooove this so much and I think more moms need to make the effort to get in the photos (mine included!) haha. I almost always book a photographer for big trips now so that I know I’ll get a few good photos of my husband and me, no matter what. They’re better than my selfies and it takes the pressure off to take a ton of mediocre photos lol. Your family is beautiful!

That’s a great idea. My hubby and I are going to Hawaii for our ten year anniversary…I will definitely look into booking a photographer!

They are doing family pictures tomorrow at church. I can’t wait to be in the picture with my kids.

I needed to read this today! I have almost no pictures with my kids. Isn’t that sad? Not only was this message wonderful, but your pictures are also gorgeous!
