Bucktown Music: Creating Music Lovers of All Ages

Are you looking for a developmentally appropriate, innovative, and just plain fun way to learn about music with your kids? Then I have the place for you: Bucktown Music.

Bucktown Music, a family owned small business, prides itself on introducing children as young as babies and as mature as adults to the power of music. What makes Bucktown Music so special? Its mission is to encourage the love of music through stellar education for students of all ages. And with the owners being busy parents themselves, they have a very flexible and accommodating schedule so the last thing you need to worry about is missing a music class.

Bucktown Music utilizes the research based and highly rated Kindermusik music program for teaching its littlest musicians. This music and movement program has a child centered approach that evolves with every theme, so that your child can grow along with the program from birth all the way to 5 years old. The program considers all aspects of musical development, and during our free trial class I was impressed with the social, cognitive, and language foundations that were being created within the budding musicians.

As a busy mom of two young boys, it is always a challenge for me to find a class where I can take both of my boys (aged 2 and 3.5) and have the instruction be stimulating and engaging for both of them. Thankfully I came across the unique “Mixed Age Wiggle and Grow” class, which was a perfect fit for us.

From the moment we walked into the classroom, my boys were excited about the instruments, the varied music, the innovative technology, the silly physical activities, and the interactive storybook reading. I was thrilled with the fact that they were being introduced to vocabulary that I don’t typically use with them at home (which then equipped me to be a more musically focused parent at home) and were able to be their silly and wiggly selves in a safe and nurturing environment, all while indirectly and directly studying music.

From the sensory stimulation activities to the instrument exploration and vocal play, clear musical concepts were explained in a way that even the youngest learner could understand  and the video clips and dancing simply reinforced the focus of the lesson in such a fun way that the 45 minutes flew by.

My boys were pretty bummed when class was over, but thankfully I learned some new techniques to use when playing music at home to help develop my boys’ singing voice and “ear” development. When you commit to a Kindermusik session, each student receives a thematic album along with activities and materials to use to study music at home.

Be sure to check out their website for class descriptions and schedules, keeping in mind that the best deal is to sign up for the unlimited package, and take advantage of discounted sibling rates as well!

Older Musicians

Bucktown Music provides programming not just in their location, but also in schools, daycares and play spaces. They also provide private lessons, all through professional and experienced teachers with music degrees, using an established, high quality curriculum.

For those students who have graduated from the Kindermusik program, they have the opportunity to study instrumental techniques and theory with the support of a caring adult through an innovative Piano Partners program. The goal of this structure is so that the adult becomes proficient with the instrument so that the learning can continue at home.

There are also private lessons available for just about every instrument you can think of, as well as group classes for kids.

  • Singing Sensations (ages 6-10)
  • Fiddlin’ Around (ages 8-12)
  • Strummin’ Ukes (ages 8-12)
  • Rockin’ Guitars (ages 9-13)

Adult guitar lessons are also provided, so be sure to look into those for yourself…the kids shouldn’t be the ones who have ALL the fun, right?!?

“At Bucktown Music, our mission is to inspire students of all ages and abilities to love music by providing the very best music education for students and families. A good beginning never ends!”

My mom took my brother to Kindermusik, they loved it. Now that I have my own kids, we’ve done some music classes here and there. Locally, we have a music together class that was really well received by both my toddler and baby. It’s great to hear the older one singing songs that he’s learned, and improvising his own verses. Thanks for sharing!

Hi! Thanks for the great article and I’m glad you had a wonderful time in class! Just one quick correction, we take newborn babies as well! The youngest child (besides my daughter) to come to our Kindermusik class was 3 weeks old! It’s a great way for new moms to get out of the house and learn how to communicate with their babies!

  3. Nikki says

I wish we had something like this in our area when my son was little. I think he would have benefited from it quite a bit, as he always loved singing and dancing. I love programs like this that encourage kids to really engage with music in whole new ways. Sounds like a fun program!

As a pianist and lover of all things musical, I enjoyed reading your post about Bucktown Music. Music and Art can get overlooked and pushed aside in lieu of sports and other activities. Your article was very informative and easy to read. Great job! As a former Chicago area resident…I will be back to read more of your adventures.

I love programs like this for kids! Music is a great way to get children active and learning when they are younger. Kindermusik has always been an active class in our area for the kids to take part in.

Love Kindermusik…such a great and thoughtful program that will create future artists for years to come!

We do not have Bucktown Music where I live, but I wish we did. They have cut a lot of the music and arts programs in the school that centers like Bucktown Music give an alternative to parents who wish to start their kids off at a young age to learn to love music. Thanks for sharing your experience!

    • amandasimkin says

Isn’t it so disappointing that so many of the arts are being underfunded or cut from programs? So incredibly disappointing.

  7. Tami says

My little guy loves music. He’s always dancing to it or picking up his brother’s Guitar Hero play guitar to play to his own song “Whoa, whoa, whoa”. I love it! I wish that these classes were in our area, as he’d have the best time!

  8. Anita Utami says

This is fun! My toddler shows big interest in musical instrument. Being musically trained myself, I want my daughter to have the same musical knowledge that I have. It seems like Bucktown Music is what we need! I am not sure when you can start teaching little kids about music, but after reading your post, they can start as early as possible. Thank you for sharing!

I would so love to go to a Kindermuzik class with my son, he absolutely loves music. He plays the piano his his grandparents house and strums away on his ukulele. He’s just begun to try singing too (he’s only just 2) so I think he’d benefit a lot from a class like this. I need to see if there are any in our area, he’d love it!

  10. Ashley says

We did Kindermusik when my daughter was younger, and she loved it! Creating a love for music is so important, more so now when music seems to be getting cut from all the public schools as non-essential. It’s awesome to see that places like Bucktown see this and are doing something to help educate our kids 🙂

  11. Robin Gagnon says

What a fantastic program for kids. My daughter struggles with fine motor coordination, and something like this would have been very beneficial to her at this age. Now, she plays KidzBop all day…lol

    • amandasimkin says

I love that there are classes like this to help kids develop their physical, mental, and emotional skills.

  12. Jeanine says

This is awesome! I’ve always wanted to go to a class like this with my littles. I’m not too sure why I never have but it looks like such fun! I’m glad to hear it was a great time!

    • amandasimkin says

Since Kindermusik is nation wide and has a free trial class, you should see if there are any options close to you. Thanks for stopping by!

  13. Sharon - Her Organized Chaos says

We have a Kindermusik here and I would love to take my 2 and 1 year old but I am a tad scared that I would get so overwhelmed. That place looks like fun though. Maybe it won’t be so bad because they LOVE music. Everytime my 8 year old turns her radio on in her room (yes radio and not ipod LOL) they have a huge dance party.

  14. Lauren Harmon says

This is such a fun concept and so awesome for creativity and inspiring passion, rhythm, and so much more in little ones! I love the idea of attending music class with my future littles and will definitely look into something like this in my area when the time comes!

    • amandasimkin says

I wish these types of programs were around when I was young…my musical knowledge is so absurdly low.

  15. Liz Mays says

I am a HUGE proponent of the importance of music to children, and since it has largely been cut from public school curriculums, I really appreciate this type of program. I like that they have something for a broad range of ages!

  16. Cindy (Vegetarian Mamma) says

This looks like so much fun and something my kids would enjoy. Sometimes finding age appropriate music for everybody to enjoy is hard. My kids love to move and groove to music and would enjoy being around the other kids too!

    • amandasimkin says

It is such a challenge to find classes that I can take BOTH of my boys to, that’s why I was so glad to find this mixed age class!

  17. Nancy says

Music has a huge impact on my life. I remember my parents putting on the cassette tapes when I was younger, and we just danced to the oldies tunes. I loved it!

  18. Krysta says

My fiancé plays the bass and sings and he is always playing with our daughter who definitely has an affinity towards music and dancing! I think it is so important to learn instruments as a child and love that there are programs who foster such a grew environment for it!

  19. Kori says

I absolutely love Kindermusik and definitely think that music makes a huge difference in the development of children. Arts in general make a difference in so many ways.

  20. Colette - JamericanSpice says

What a good business. I wish I could be tutored by them. I’d love to play the guitar. And of course I’d love if my children learn to play the piano.

Music is such an amazing venture, I love to immerse myself!

I’ve heard much about the kindermusic program since my babies were much younger. I’ve always desired to have them in the program.
I’m glad to see my kids age group included.
    Thanks for sharing.

I wish I could as well. One of my life goals is to learn the violin…one day! For now I will look into Bucktown’s adult guitar classes!

  21. April Decheine says

I have three children and music played a big roll in their development. We use to lay on the floor and play with our toes, then the kids would recite after me. My son was was in Madrigals all through high school.

    • amandasimkin says

I love hearing how families respect and value music…it is so important that we keep celebrating the importance of the arts.
