My family and I were able to attend the press opening of the Madison Square Garden Company’s rendition of “The Wizard of Oz” at the Chicago Theatre last night and we were truly blown away. Just how did the talented cast and crew reimagine this well loved story? Through special effects, a modern take on classic songs, as well as the beautiful backdrops and artistic performances by Dorothy and her pals—including a real life Toto (my boys’ favorite character, hands down).

What was most astounding to me was that the way technology was incorporated throughout the musical. It seamlessly helped Dorothy travel to and from Kansas, as well as build up the conflict in the story between the Wicked Witch, the Wizard of Oz, and the valiant travelers on the yellow brick road. Never before had I seen so many screens in a musical, but instead of taking away from the traditional story, the technological details truly enhanced it.

When bringing your kids to see Dorothy and her friends, don’t forget to take advantage of the Chicago Theatre’s booster rentals, as well as prepare your kids for some smoke, loud noises, and somewhat scary faces on screens and stage. The first half of the musical is very lighthearted and whimsical, but the second portion does turn a bit darker and can be spooky and intimidating to younger theatre goers.

My husband was scared of the monkey when he was little and won’t watch this because of the memory. This was always a favorite movie and we would watch it every year on tv.

The scarecrow! (Also, I would really love to win this giveaway. I am away for college across the country and won’t be home for Mother’s Day, and The Wizard of Oz is my mom’s favorite movie of all time. She has never seen a live production of it, and I know she would LOVE to go to this with my dad and sister.) <3
