I have a love/hate relationship with Legos. I love that they promote creative, screen-free play but I cannot STAND the messy process. So to save my feet and my sanity, I have rounded up the BEST places to take Lego lovers in Chicagoland. Just be sure to act fast since some of the cool Lego themed exhibits are only in Chicagoland for a limited time!
Brick Safari at Brookfield Zoo
Brookfield Zoo is one of our favorite places to explore any time of year. But in addition to the animals, the playgrounds, and our favorite Hamill Family Play Zoo, there is something new to enjoy this summer: Brick Safari.
Now through September 29th, your family can see your favorite creatures—from roaring tigers to leaping dolphins—in a new and unique way. The exhibit showcases over 40 life size animal sculptures created from millions of individual Lego bricks.
See the Lego animals and then find their live counterparts throughout the vast offerings at the Brookfield Zoo. For tickets to Brick Safari, click here.
Nature Connects: Art with Lego Bricks by Sean Kenney
Out of all of the exhibits held at the gorgeous Morton Arboretum in Lisle, my Lego loving family was ENTHRALLED by Sean Kenney’s Nature Connects exhibit. After a few years touring the world, I am happy to report that the artistic Lego themed display is BACK at the Morton Arbortem through September 15th.
You will find 15 intricate Lego brick statues stationed throughout the East side of the Arborteum. New 2019 highlights include a bee midflight (thank goodness it doesn’t sting!), an oak tree sprouting from an acorn, and a pileated woodpecker with a bright crimson chest.
There are also opportunities for children (and adults) to enjoy their own self guided Lego brick play. They can mimic the art throughout the Morton Arboretum or come up with their own unique creation. Click here for more details on the Nature Connects: Art with Lego Bricks by Sean Kenney exhibit.
Legoland Discovery Center Chicago
Whether you are looking for opportunities to play with all different types of Legos, Lego movies, or Lego themed amusement park rides, there is something for absolutely EVERYONE at Legoland Discovery Center. My boys can spend hours building and rebuilding cars to race down the tracks in the open play area and I love taking in the 4D Lego themed films. But before you head to Legoland Discovery Center Chicago, be sure to check my guide about how to get discounted tickets and when is the best time to visit.
Blocks to Bricks
Ever wonder how the fascination with Lego blocks came to be? Can you imagine what the machine that creates Legos actually looks like? Do you want to try your hand at collaborating with talented Lego artists? Then Blocks to Bricks is the museum for you. Check out my article about what to expect when you visit this one of a kind museum for building lovers.
And if you are too tired to venture out, here are some fun and creative ways to play with Legos at home.
