Looking for a special way to spend time together as a family that doesn’t involve long lines or sky high prices? Then check out these three ideas for the Ultimate Family Playdate in Chicagoland.
The Family Show at the Chicago Magic Lounge
Price: $15 for kids, $25 for adults
Best for Ages: 5 and up
This hip Andersonville hot spot becomes family friendly every Sunday afternoon. Families can enjoy delicious food and drinks, such as the Publican sausage board or treats from Katherine Anne’s Confections, all while being amazing by the warm and charismatic magicians. Get up close and personal with the magicians (and their feathered friends) for photos after the show in the majestic and quirky library lounge. Just don’t get fooled by the mysterious and unique entrance to the Chicago Magic Lounge and miss the show entirely!
Blue Man Group
Price: $49 and up
Best for Ages: 7 and up
Remember the show that you went to for date night pre-kids? Well, the Blue Man Group was just revamped (more audience interaction, extra creative costumes and skits) and is great for families who are looking for a show that appeals to even the wiggliest of kids.
I have a very skittish seven-year-old who became so incredibly anxious before the show even started and I was nervous that he would never relax. With some support from the kind and empathetic Briar Street theatre staff (and some awesome drumstick souvenirs), he eventually became confident enough to return to his seat and enjoy the show along with the rest of the audience. Keep in mind that the loudest part of the show is right at the beginning, so bring along noise cancelling head phones or ask to borrow a pair from the box office before the show begins.
If you want to make your family play date even more unique, upgrade to the Centennial Wheel package that includes not just a Blue Man group show, but also a spin on the beautiful Centennial Wheel at Navy Pier.
Dinner and a Show at the Marriott Lincolnshire
Price: $18 per person
Best for Ages: 4 and up
Many people know the Marriott Lincolnshire for weddings and adult theatre, but did you know that they specialize in children’s theatre? “Shrek” is the featured performance through December and it is sure to delight the young and old. Children are welcome to come up close and personal in the kids’ seating area or can hang back with mom and dad in the regular theatre seats.
After the show, head to Three Embers for a delicious farm to table meal. The creative chef does a wonderful job balancing flavors and wowing any and all palates. From soups to salads, entrées and desserts, everyone will leave full and satisfied.
