One of the most important lessons I hope to pass on to my kids is that they should always be “includers”. Instead of building a longer fence, my mission is to raise kids who will build a longer table. I want them to be the kind of people who reach out to others and are ensuring that no one is left out or alienated. So when we were offered to check out We Rock the Spectrum, a play space with a focus on inclusivity, we jumped at the chance. My family and I had such a great time playing and learning all about what makes We Rock the Spectrum a wonderfully unique kid’s gym for all families.

Located in a strip mall in Palatine, you could easily pass by We Rock the Spectrum without noticing it. But once you step through the doors, you are transported into a positive, collaborative space that is perfect for any and all families. We Rock the Spectrum is a sensory based gym that encourages children grow in a safe, inviting space. The founder describes it “Finally A Place Where I Never Have to Say I’m Sorry”—a challenge that many parents of special needs children know all too well.
While the gym might not be incredibly large, there is a wide variety of equipment and it all meets different sensory needs. There are tons of swings and other mobility equipment for children to choose from that promote full-body awareness in a fun and creative way, as well as other fun toys and activities that will undoubtedly make your child’s eyes light up.
Some of the gym equipment includes:
Zip box with slide
In addition to physical play, there are also areas for art, Legos, and pretend play (ie—train tables, play kitchens, etc.). There is definitely something for everyone, including a quiet down room for when kids need to take a break in a more private space. My boys especially loved the tactile board throughout the space which encourages sensory play for all.
When we visited it was at a more quiet hour, but it was wonderful to see how kids of all abilities will interact with each other when in a safe place like We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym. The trampoline and zip line were the most prized activities on the day we visited, and I loved seeing how the kids cooperated with minimal parent guidance to take turns and cheer each other on. It was true inclusivity in action.
We Rock the Spectrum in Palatine is one of the only local gyms that offers Zumbini and also holds Jbaby and Fit for Mom classes. It is also popular for school field trips since they can be tailored specifically towards your group’s needs with different goal setting activities. Lastly, We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym offers great birthday parties and can also be rented out for private playdates to help reduce social anxiety.
