For most of us a trip to Germany for Oktoberfest isn’t feasible, but luckily for us there is a much closer (and just as fun) option–Hofbräuhaus Chicago! Nestled in Rosemont’s Parkway Bank Park, this German gem is the perfect place for Chicagoland families to celebrate Oktoberfest. I mean, once my kids heard that you are actually ENCOURAGED to stand on benches and tables to dance, they were pretending that we were German (spoiler alert—we aren’t but let’s keep the charade going, eh?). Here’s what to expect from Hofbräuhaus Chicago’s Oktoberfest Celebration:
I received a complimentary experience from Hofbräuhaus Chicago. All opinions are my own.
What is Oktoberfest?
Since 1810 Bavarians have been getting together to celebrate Oktoberfest, an annual festival that began with the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese and grew to become a worldwide celebration of German tradition.
What Can I Expect from Hofbräuhaus Chicago’s Oktoberfest Celebration?
Hofbräuhaus Chicago’s Oktoberfest celebration includes an assortment of authentic entertainment from a variety of acts including a lively 40-piece German Bugle band, daily live music from authentic “oompah” bands direct from Germany and Austria, live performances from several authentic dance and singing troupes and celebrity keg tapping ceremonies every Friday night.
Make plans to visit Hofbräuhaus Chicago’s Oktoberfest celebration on either Friday or Saturday night when patrons have the opportunity to participate in the famous “Masskrugstemmen” stein-holding contest. It is a Bavarian sport that requires strength, stamina, and pure determination—and a one liter stein of beer. Whoever holds the stein parallel to the floor with only one arm the longest is the winner and everyone’s in the hall’s best friend that night.
In addition to the stein holding competition, there are parades for the whole family to join in on, as well as entertainment that will get everyone in the beer hall up on their feet—and onto the benches and tables! I definitely do NOT recommend ordering a shot when at Hofbräuhaus Chicago because it comes with a waitress, a paddle—and a sore rear end.
What is on the Hofbräuhaus Chicago’s Oktoberfest menu?
There is a massive menu of Bavarian specialties available at Hofbräuhaus Chicago, including a savory variety of schnitzels, sausages, and other German dishes as well as roast chicken and burgers. There is also a great children’s menu that caters to both the brave and picky eaters.
No trip to Hofbräuhaus Chicago is complete without a GIANT Bavarian pretzel, served with a multitude of dipping sauces. During Hofbräuhaus Chicago’s Oktoberfest celebration there will be daily food specials that include unique dishes that aren’t on the year-round menu.
The star of Hofbräuhaus Chicago’s Oktoberfest, Oktoberfestbier is brewed at Hofbräuhaus Chicago’s onsite microbrewery using the same method used for centuries at the original Hofbräuhaus in Munich, Germany. The brewing of all beers served at Hofbräuhaus Chicago is led by a brewmaster who is trained in the 400-year-old recipes and techniques needed to produce Hofbräuhaus Chicago’s beer.
Is there Anything Special for Kids?
YES! Not only is there constant entertainment, dancing, and a delicious kids’ meal, Hofbräuhaus Chicago also hosts events specifically for families. Mark your calendar for a scary good time on Sunday, October 27th between 1 and 4 p.m. for Hofbräuhaus Chicago’s Halloween Kinderfest. The spooktacular party will feature costume contests, parades, live music, face painting, Halloween-themed arts and crafts stations and more.
Any Tips for Visiting Hofbräuhaus Chicago’s Oktoberfest Celebration?
