Green Summer Beauty Staples

Noktivo Spa is one of Chicago’s premiere green beauty salons, and Jenny Duranski, the founder of this great small business, is here to share her Green Summer Beauty Staples so you can spend less time worrying about what products to use to keep your family safe and instead focus on having fun and making great family memories.  Thanks, Jenny!

Ah, the glorious days of summer are finally here. The air smells like cook outs, the city is full of life again and the warm sun is shining, welcoming each new day. Here in Chicago we long for these days and when they come everyone takes advantage, it’s my favorite part about living here. NO ONE in Chicagoland takes summer for granted. Which is why it’s no wonder that we are also eager to find products that help us enjoy it as long as we can.

It’s funny when I look at my summer beauty staples. It doesn’t sound so glamorous when your makeup bag is compiled of products to ward of sunburns, bugs and odor. What’s even less glamorous is that a lot of these products can contain ingredients that aren’t good for us.

As more and more research about the link between what we put on our skin and our health becomes more evident, I live by the motto “When in doubt, leave it out.” Luckily for us, more and more products are becoming available that are just as effective without questionable ingredients like aluminum, parabens, propylene glycol, DEET and oxybenzone. I’ve rounded up a few of my tried and true favorites to keep your skin healthy and the bugs, burns and body odor away.

For Sun

Coola Body SPF 30 Plumeria Moisturizer. This lightweight and wonderful smelling sunscreen is made with 70% Certified Organic ingredients and is formulated to smooth, soften and balance the skin while protecting from UVA/ UVB rays. Apply evenly 15 minutes before sun exposure. The American Cancer Society recommends reapplication every 2 hours while in direct sun, or after 40 minutes of swimming/sweating. $32 at Merz Apothecary.

For Deodorant

Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant in Bergamot Lime or Lavender Sage. Conventional deodorants have been around for over a century now, and are loaded with chemicals that don’t belong on our bodies, especially an area as sensitive as the underarms. Schmidt’s provides 24 hours of odor-protection and wetness relief using essential oils, baking soda and skin healing shea butter. To apply, remove product from jar using enclosed spatula. Warm a small dab between fingers, and apply. $10 at Noktivo Spa.

For Bugs

Zoe Organics Insect Repellent. This is not your ordinary insect repellent; this lovely, 100% organic blend of botanical oils will keep the bugs at bay while you enjoy outdoor activities. And big bonus, it actually smells great, a rarity for insect repellents! Dispense onto exposed skin or into hands and gently rub in. To apply to face, first dispense product into hands and apply to hairline, avoiding eye area. Reapply every two hours or as needed. Recommended for ages 6 months and older.  $22 at Target.

Hope that you remember to get a moisturizer with SPF since that is so key all year round, especially during the summer.

Agreed. So glad that there are so many great sunscreens out there since skin cancer can be so deadly.

I didn’t know esential oils could be used in deodorant. That makes good sense though. I’d like to try the lavender/sage.

I have never heard of these products until now. I would love to try this sunscreen from Coola.

This is a first of hearing of this product line, but it really does sound pretty fabulous ! I will have to check it out!

I’ve switched most of my body products to natural/organic. The Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant in Bergamot Lime or Lavender Sage sounds amazing – will have to see if my natural food store carries it.

I might try the sunscreen. Particularly as it’s been 100+ degrees practically every day here where we live. My wife would love us to try some more natural products too.
