Let’s get honest here for a second. Like really honest. You see, my kids inherited a lot from me, from my hair color to my sensitivity to smells and my obsession with decorating for the holidays. But another thing that they have inherited? The fact that I get HANGRY. No, not hungry—H A N G R Y. Basically the three of us turn into beast mode if we don’t eat something substantial every few hours and I’m sure we aren’t the only ones. So today I’m sharing one of my favorite recipes for keeping my kids and I happy instead of hangry: Grain Berry Energy Clusters.

First off, let’s talk about how I came up with the recipe. These energy clusters feature one of the healthiest cereals on the market, Grain Berry cereal, and as a result I know I can add a bit of sweetness in the form of light powdered sugar and chocolate chips knowing full well that the base of this snack is not only healthy, but also provides my boys with the protein and fiber that they need in order to snap out of their hangry spell. Grain Berry is also the first cereal to be made with Onyx Sorghum which has many antioxidants that helps diabetes, heart problems, and more.
When my boys grab preservative laden snacks, they are never satisfied. So I knew that I should combine Grain Berry cereal with hearty foods that my kids already loved (heeey, peanut butter!) in order to create a hearty snack option that is easy for them to grab when they come home from school. Finally, the addition of pantry staples like nuts, crushed pretzels and dried fruit adds texture and extra flavor.
So what makes my Grain Berry energy clusters so great for busy moms like me? The fact that my kids can eat Grain Berry energy clusters when racing to and from school activities (just substitute Sun Butter to take allergies into account) and that my boys can make them ON THEIR OWN. Yes, that’s right, they do all the hard work while you sit back and can drink an entire cup of coffee while it is still hot.
My Grain Berry energy clusters are always a bit different based on the ingredients we have at home, but my taste testers have claimed this version of the recipe to be a hands down winner.
- 2 cups Grain Berry cereal (you can purchase here)
- 1/3 cup powdered sugar
- ½ cup broken pretzels
- ¼ cup crushed pistachios
- ¼ cup chocolate chips
- ¼ cup dried cranberries
- ¾ cup creamy peanut butter (or reduce to ½ a cup if using Sun Butter)
- 1/3 cup canned pumpkin puree
Start off with two bowls and mix together the dry ingredients in one and the wet ingredients in another. Next, slowly start adding the wet mixture into the dry mixture. It will be messy, but that’s where the fun lies, right? Once fully mixed, use your hands (not spoons—because what’s the fun in that?) to form quarter sized balls. They won’t look perfect by any means, but they will be delicious. Arrange the Grain Berry energy clusters onto a baking sheet (ensure they do not touch) and pop into the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before eating. If you notice that the energy clusters are falling apart, add more dry ingredients to balance your proportions out.
