18 Must Have Apps for Traveling Families

Oh, technology.  We have such a love/hate relationship.  I absolutely love that I can use technology to keep myself from getting lost as well as get inspiration on what to make for dinner that evening, but it also tends to dominate too much of my day.  I most definitely have a technology addiction. But when does technology really make my life easier?  When traveling.  I am really not sure how I survived traveling not only when I am by myself, but also with two squirmy little boys in tow without my favorite travel apps. And to make sure that your next trip is filled with wonderful fun and positive memories instead of stress and worry, be sure to download these 18 must have apps for traveling families:

This app comes in handy wherever you are (I can’t be the only one who gets lost a mile from her house, can I?!?) because it comes up with the quickest way to get from point A to point B, taking into consideration traffic, construction, etc.  I am shocked how much time it saves me—and this app will ensure that you don’t get lost no matter how new the city is to you.

One of the best ways to pick restaurants and activities is to read about others’ experiences at these places.  That’s why I love Yelp—the honest feedback and reviews.  Yes, there are always some crazy people who are just plain never happy but you can get an overall feel of a place by the Yelp reviews.

APP toilet finder

Toilet Finder

Because when you gotta go, you gotta go.

Trip Advisor

I love the Trip Advisor app because it has both offline and online access to reviews anywhere you want to travel. It takes the guess work out of traveling and makes something that tends to be overwhelming as simple as possible.

SeatGuru and GateGuru

I was shocked when my brother in law introduced these apps to me because they are so incredibly detailed and just plain amazing!  For Seat Guru, it will give you information specifically about the seats on the plane, such as which ones have slightly more leg room, which are closest to the bathroom, etc.  How cool is that?  And Gate Guru is another great app because it will tell you what resources are around you while waiting at your gate.  Wondering what food options are nearby?  Where you can charge your cell phone?  If you can pick up a quick souvenir?  Gate Guru tells you everything.

APPS busy shapes

Busy Shapes

This app doesn’t just focus on learning the names of shapes.  It instead focuses on spatial recognition and introduces and reinforces reasoning skills in a fun way.

Bugs and Numbers

Focused around a creative bug city, your child will learn number skills in a new and nontraditional way.  The animations on this app are amazingly cool and make math an interesting subject for even someone like me who dreads math.

Seriously.  The Toca apps are amazing.  Whether it is doctor, band, kitchen, store, train…they are all focused on learning through creative play with great graphics.  Just be sure to turn the volume down.

School Aged Kids

Brain Pop Junior Movie of the Week

Kids can explore different subjects and topics through the different movies of the week. The app will challenge them to question, connect, and promote their critical thinking.  Get ready for some hard questions to be posed after the brain juices get flowing, parents!

Put your kids to work documenting your trip and other travels by using this story creator app.  Kids can tell their own story using photos, videos, and text.

APP sushi monster

APPS chatbooks

Do you have the same problem as me with about 1,500 photos on your phone that you never remember to print? Oh how I need an entire week to organize photos!

I need to download toilet finder before our next trip in April. I swear, my 8 year old always has to pee when there is no restroom in sight.

I didn’t know we have a toilet finder app, that sure sounds helpful especially when you have a car full of kids! Thanks for sharing these awesome apps!

I use Yelp all the time. I don’t know why so many small businesses don’t like it–I think they are afraid of negative feedback.

Thanks for collating all these great apps we can avail of. My family travels occasionally, and some of these apps would work great for us. I had to smile when I found out that there is actually an app called Toilet Finder!

  6. Nikki says

These are interesting, but I mostly like is the Toilet Finder, a toilet is so hard to find while you’re in travel. I’m gonna check all of these.

I’ve used Yelp and Trip Advisor but the others seem very helpful and beneficial for our future family trips! Thank you for the tips! Planning a trip to Kansas City this year and South Dakota. September 2017 is Disney world.
